Counting Crows Part Ways With Geffen Records After 18 Years

After a relationship that bridged 18 years — from the alternative-rock boom to Napster to the current music industry decline — Counting Crows announced on their Website today that they are parting ways with their label, Geffen Records. The Counting Crows were one of the last vestiges of an era of DGC and Geffen that included artists like Nirvana, Sonic Youth, Beck and Hole. The band’s last album for the label was 2008’s Saturday Nights & Sunday Mornings.

Explaining why the band opted to leave the label, frontman Adam Duritz writes, “The Internet opens a world of limitless possibility, where the only boundaries are the boundaries of your own imagination. We want a chance to push those boundaries back as far as we can. Unfortunately, the directions we want to go and the opportunities we want to pursue are often things that our label is simply not allowed to do… We all want what’s best for everyone which is why we’ve decided to part ways.”

So, Counting Crows may be plotting a Radiohead-esque route to album releases. After 18 years, the Crows likely have a fervent enough fanbase to pull it off. Or the band could be plotting a 360 deal with a company like Live Nation. (We’ll take other theories in the comments.) To thank those fans for supporting the Counting Crows during the DGC era, the band has posted a free download of their cover of Madonna’s “Borderline,” live from London’s Royal Albert Hall.

Head on over to the official Crowes site to read the entirety of Duritz’s letter to fans and nab the track.

My theory is Counting Crows are no longer relevant. Major labels are no longer relevant.

You can purchase a download of every concert they have done on their last tour at their website. I’m not interested in paying 10 bucks a pop for each concert, but I can see people who went to the concert wanting to have it. I’m thinking this would be the route they take if they put out another album.

They also had a bunch of bonus material for the itunes version of their last album, so maybe they’ll release it exclusively through itunes. Of course it was 6 years in between the last 2 albums, so we might have to wait another 5 before we see anything.

I’ve always liked how well they cover songs, so I think they should release a cover album on their website and see how much money they make.

my theory is that music as a paid entity is no longer relevant. finally, losers who don’t want to be janitors won’t be able to avoid their responsibility to their fellow man by playing guitar in a band.

Ten years ago, I would have considered Counting Crows as one of my favorite bands. Their last album is just a stale rehash of some of their worst musical ideas. I think the CC is a classic example of a band that only had one really good album (August and Everything After)in them. Nothing else they have done has come close. The Orson Wells of Rock n Roll…

Good move! Love that cover and love the crows!

CR1ZZ | 3/17/2009, 11:28 pm EST

Counting Crows are an excellent band. They don’t just do covers, ‘Mr Jones’ nd ‘Big Yellow Taxi’ are great songs. This saturday I’m seeing them open for THE WHO, not just anyone can be worthy of opening for the who. They should put out a hits album from 91-08, that would be worth buying. Screw downloads.

John Lust For Life | 3/18/2009, 8:39 am EST

CR1ZZ,

I hope you know ‘Big Yellow Taxi’ is a cover.

Anyway, CC is done. If you didn’t hear from them when they were on a major label, you won’t hear from them w/o.

Their second album is worth picking up, too. It rocks harder than their debut.

Anonymous is no longer relevant.

No longer relevant? Seriously? Compared to the mass produced creatively lacking garbage on the radio today Counting Crows are golden. There’s a reason they are still around and have a fervent following.

Whenever I heard Counting Crows I found them pleasurable and impressive. If there wasn’t so much other music out there I probably would’ve bought one of their albums.

money isn’t the only way a man can get paid
no matter how it goes down people will always love music and you will remain a loser
support what you love

Recovering The Satellites is one of the best albums of the nineties hands down. They’ve honestly never able to live up to that standard since – strange how many great bands that started in the 90s peaked with their second records (Weezer, Foo Fighters, etc).

Colin | 3/18/2009, 8:08 pm EST

Something has happened to the Crows. Musically, I still think they have brilliance wrapped around them. But to be unwilling/unable/whatever to tour on their own for God-knows how many years is beyond my imagination. They are a talented, aged, successful, and entertaining enough band to take over a stage by themselves. To co-headline with Maroon 5 and Goo Goo Dolls (and KEITH URBAN at Summerfest this year!) is ridiculous. I want to follow Adam all around the stage for 2-3 hours without putting up with other nonsense. Why isn’t that happening?

Dude Man | 3/18/2009, 11:17 pm EST

Counting Crows are just a good alternative/popish rock band that are just fun to listen to. I wish them the best.

Re Colin:

The Counting Crows are about to begin a solo tour of Australia and the U.K. at the end of the month.

DORF | 3/19/2009, 10:22 am EST

I’ve seen them twice, once opening for Cracker, and once opening for the Stones. And for me seeing them twice was two times too many. Worst band of the 90s IMO.

TobyTyler | 3/19/2009, 11:16 am EST

Are they still together?!?

I agree…the Crows are no longer relevant. Their first album should have been titled “August – And Everything After Sucks.”

winter | 4/19/2009, 11:39 am EST

Still my favorite band.
