Man killed in ATM bombing

August 25 2008 at 06:49PM

A man was shot dead after a botched ATM bombing in Kagiso, Johannesburg West Rand police said on Monday.

Inspector Solomon Sibiya said police received information about the intended ATM bombing and waited for the gang.

Sibiya said four men arrived on the scene and bombed the ATM, but drove away when police approached.

A car chase ensured in which the men and police exchanged gun fire.

"The suspects drove to a certain house, jumped out of the car and continued to shoot towards the police," Sibiya said.

One man was wounded and later died at Leratong hospital while the other three escaped.

No money was taken from the ATM.

Sibiya said anyone with information about the three on the run should contact the police on 011-696-9000. - Sapa
