The sections for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in Virginia are often more forgiving than in other states, so if you're not from around here don't forget that a large number of rivers in this state are quite easy. If you hurry you can run this stretch in a day but why not make it an overnighter, so why not pack your camp stove too. The campgrounds here at Conway River are pretty good. The put-in location is a reasonable drive from Charlottesville, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way this area has a large number of paddling places. This is the only paddling stretch along Conway River. The Rt. 667 to Rapidan River and Route 29 Bridge section of Conway River is 13 miles long and is a class II-III section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. No shortage of good hotels, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. Getting some good exercise and spending some quality time in nature are sure to keep you coming back for more. The cold days of the winter come with highs in the 40's; during the dark hours in the wintertime at Conway River temperatures plunge to the 20's.
