Missing autistic man found in Crest Hill
Police in Crest Hill found a 22-year-old autistic man wandering around the southwest suburb Monday, about 20 miles from where he had been reported missing Sunday.
Police said Russell Sims was upset with his family and ran away from from their home in the 2000 block of West Illinois Avenue in Aurora about 5 p.m. Sunday.
Police found him safely about 9 a.m. Monday near Caton Farm and Weber roads, according to Crest Hill police.
"He was found wandering around town and we picked him up," Deputy Chief Bradley Hertzmann said. "He is expected to be picked up by Aurora police and will be reunited with his family."
He did not appear to be injured and did not require medical attention, Hertzmann said.
Police originally said Sims could hear but was unable to speak. Police and canine officers from several jurisdictions assisted with the search.
Crest Hill is located about 20 miles from Aurora, according to a Web directory. It was unclear Monday morning how Sims traveled to Crest Hill.
