Wal-Mart Donates Food For Locals

National Chain Teams Up With Second Harvest Food Bank To Pass Out Groceries

Wal-Mart is donating more than $32 million toward hunger relief nationwide, and locally, the chain teamed up with Second Harvest Food Bank and passed out the goods at the Schell-Sweet Community Center on Friday.

Locals waited in line and left with bags full of groceries.

"It's been a great help," said Carolyn Newkirk, who received some of the food given out. "I had a stroke three years ago, and I never intended to be coming, but I'm here and I'm very gracious and thankful."

Wal-Mart isn't donating food only locally. It gave a refrigerated truck worth $85,000 to Second Harvest Food Bank, and it has also given 34 other trucks to food banks across the country.

"We're so grateful for a beautiful new truck, but on the incoming food side, more groceries stores more pounds into the community," said Jim Chynoweth, Second Harvest Food Bank's director of procurement.

With their new truck, Chynoweth said the food bank can get the food to more people in the area who really need it.

"I do appreciate it all, and I hope that the neighbors appreciate it, too," one local said.

According to a national statistic, one in six Americans at some point in the year won't know where their next meal is coming from.

If you want to get involved by donating, or may need some assistance, go to www.wenourishhope.com or call 904-353-FOOD.
