About the event : The Idjut Boys. No one could take you seriously with a name like that. Well, not unless you're Dan Tyler and Conrad McDonnell that is. Idjut Boys call themselves stupid, yet their music is anything but. It's a world away from the dumb productions that usually proliferate dance music, that's for sure. Tracks where they grab disco, dub, electro, funk, house, hip hop and rock, then fuse the lot into the kind of groove that leaves dancefloors reeling and their peers speechless.

Venue : RI-RA, DAME COURT, DUBLIN 2
Time : 11.30 TIL LATE
Admission : Admission 7E b4 12, 10 after
About the event : He's one half of Metro Area, the other being Darshan Jesrani, who has played twice for Downtownsounds in Dublin. Between 1999 and 2001 they garnered underground acclaim with a series of independently released 12 inches which blurred the lines between house, electro and disco. In 2002, a compilation of their finest work was licensed worldwide by Source Records, also home to Air. It became one of the largest word of mouth successes of recent years, leading to a rapturously received European tour and high profile appearances at festivals like Sonar in Barcelona and Paris' La Villete Numerique. While Darshan has travelled all over Europe and beyond rocking clubs with his energetic mix of disco and deep house, Geist has been content to stay at home working on solo material and licensing material for their 'Unclassics' series. They call it 'Unclassics' because as Geist says, 'it ain't your usual disco stuff'. Pressed up on DJ-friendly heavy black vinyl, these are obscure, synthesized disco and electro-funk dancefloor bombs which should keep the Ri-Ra floor shaking well into the early hours. An 'Unclassics' mix CD was issued late last year, and this is one of only a handful of European dates to promote it this summer. This man is not a huge fan of flying so to say that this appearance is rare as hen's teeth is an understatement..... you mightn't see him back on Irish soil this decade! Downtownsounds DJ's will be warming up the crowd with a mix of funk, cosmic boogie and disco

Venue : Ri-Ra, Dame Court, Dublin 2
Time : Doors open 11.30pm
Admission : e10, e8 with flyer and just e5 before midnight!
About the event : Mention MC Ri-Ra or DJ Mek to anybody who knows their salt about Irish music and you are guaranteed to be told a story about a live show in Barnstormers, or a funny tale that involved Scary Eire and their shenanigans. MC Ri-Ra is widely regarded as Irelands most prolific MC, a wordsmith who does not need to rap like he is from the USA to get his point across. Ri-Ra is 100% Irish culture and the fact he rhymes over beats also makes him a part of Hip Hop culture, but there is a lot more to Ri-Ra and DJ Mek than what scene they are affiliated to. Ri-Ra has been down for the crown since the 1980\\\'s, back when himself and Mek were part of legendary crew Scary Eire. They rose to prominence in the early 1990\\\'s for their live shows, Scary Eire comprised of Sloosh, Ri-Ra, Mek and Mr. Brown - They were the original Irish Bboys. They had a raw talent that got the notice of James Lavelle who asked them to sign for Mo\\\'Wax back in the mid 90\\\'s - but they said no, The Global Hip Hop Tommy Boy release in 1993/4 showcasing the best in Hip Hop from around the globe earned them superstar status along with The London Posse. Warming up for U2 at their Zooropa Tour in The RDS, Scary Eire were one of the hottest properties on the Irish music scene. Around the mid 90\\\'s all members went their separate ways for various reasons. Mek and Ri-Ra continued to pursue their respective crafts, Mek / Djing, Ri-Ra/Mcing

"Astonishing stuff... genuinely from off the musical map, sounds you haven't heard before, or at least haven't heard treated with such childlike invention and innocence DJ "A psychedelic kaleidoscope of hallucinatory abstractions, there's nothing else out there that sounds like this IDJ Mississippi-born producer DIPLO makes an eagerly-awaited debut Irish show when he comes to the intimate confines of Ri Ra in Dublin on Friday 26th August. Having released one of the best albums of 2004 with his debut Floridaâ (Big Dada) a universally lauded album with a cutting edge distinction had one critic hailing him as hiphop answer to the Aphex Twin DIPLO has come to prominence this year as the musical force behind MIAs Mercury-nominated Arular album while also having remixed Gwen Stafani, RJd2, DJ Shadow and Kano amongst others. About the event : 'The Butch Cassidy Sound System' Some of you may know this man as Pablo and if you do then you know that he is one of the finest producers to come out of the UK in the last while proving he is one of the most able Hip-Hop and Reggae producers in that country. Butch Cassidy has recorded as Pablo for LTJ Bukem's Good Looking label, Guidance Records, Red Hook, Freddy Fresh's Howlin' label and Fenetik. You may also recognise his name from as far back as 1999 when he featured on Peanut Butter Wolf's 'My Vinyl Weighs A Ton' LP. He's also recorded as The Butch Cassidy Sound System for Red Hook, Guidance & Fenetik. Anyone who's a fan of Grand Theft Auto - San Andreas will recognise the Butch Cassidy Sound System as the composer to the theme tune and end of level music for that game. Pablo made waves a few years ago with his innovative 12" release of the 'History of Sampling EP' which, amongst other things, included a track that had its vocals comprised entirely of hiphop lyric samples but melded in such a way that they followed a linear story. Have a listen to it by clicking on the link to the right... The Butch Cassidy Sound System will be coming live and direct in RiRa, Dame Court, D2 on Friday, 18th

Reviews : DOWNTOWNSOUNDS PROUDLY PRESENTS A CHICAGO LEGEND........ BOO WILLIAMS ( Relief Records, Strictly Jaz Unit - Chicago) Friday November 25th @Ri-Ra Dame Court, Dublin 2: 01- 4780225 Doors 11.30pm 7E b4 12/10 after Chicago house legend Boo Williams will ramraid the doors of Ri-Ra on Friday Nov 25th with his bag of party time house and lethally funky underground disco. Mr Williams was one of the leading lights of the \\\'second wave\\\' of Chicago house producers who ripped up dancefloors in the mid 90\\\'s and inspired the likes of Basement Jaxx and Daft Punk. He\\\'ll bring over twenty years of DJ-ing experience to Ri-Ra, having headlined some of the world\\\'s biggest clubs such as Ministry Of Sound ( London), Fuse (Brussels) and E-Works (Berlin), as well as the house stage at Homelands Ireland in 2000. Hailing from the southside of Chicago, Boo Williams has led a life steeped in this thing we call house. He began DJ-ing in the early 80\\\'s when just a teenager, feeding off the psychotropic nightlife at The Music Box and The Warehouse, the wild cut\\\'n\\\'paste radio shows of The Hot Mix 5, and the seminal early productions by the likes of Chip E, Kenny \\\'Jammin\\\' Jason, Adonis and most of all, deep house autuer Larry Heard\\\'s productions as Mr Fingers and Fingers Inc. Heard himself has said \\\'I didn\\\'t realise that there was this group of kids who were studying our every move\\\'. While Chicago\\\'s house scene had fallen in on itself by the early 90\\\'s - some blame Larry Sherman\\\'s Trax label for tying so many artists up in unfair deals and ripping them off, some blame the cheesy advent of hip house, some say that the music got lost in a 303 squelch shaped hole - there was a second generation coming up who would restore Chicago to the forefront of the house revolution, chief among them Boo Williams and his flatmate Glenn Underground. He released his first track on Holland\\\'s Djax label in 1993, before going on to become one of the main featured producers on Cajmere\\\'s Relief label, breaking through with the booming \\\'Midnight Express\\\' in 1995. He has collaborated with Underground on a sublime series of Strictly Jaz Unit releases, while continuing to make underground club cuts under a variety of pseudonyms. As one of the premier representatives of the Chicago sound, Boo has headlined the world\\\'s most famous clubs including Ministry of Sound (London), Fuse (Brussels), and E-Works (Berlin) as well as countless events in every major US market from NYC to San Francisco. As a DJ he has nigh on twenty five years experience in the game, a virtuoso party rocker of the highest order as anyone who witnessed him at Homelands 2000 or a sweltering June evening down at 52FUNK last year will testify......

Reviews : DOWNTOWNSOUNDS PRESENTS LEGENDARY NEW YORK PARTY DJ>>>>>>> NICKY SIANO (STUDIO 54/THE GALLERY) @ RI-RA, FRIDAY DECEMBER 16TH Nicky Siano @ Ri-Ra Dame Court, Dublin 2 : 01 4780225 Friday December 16th 8euro before 12, 12euro after Siano was at the forefront of many of the seismic innovations in DJ-ing techniques that occured in New York in the 70\\\'s. After a battle with drug addiction and years as an AIDS counsellor, Siano returned to DJ-ing at the influential \\\'Body and Soul\\\' nights in 1998. He has compiled a \\\'Gallery\\\' compilation for renowned London label Soul Jazz Records and DJ-\\\'d across the five continents since. FULL BIOG Born in Brooklyn on March 18, 1955, Nicky Siano was only 16 when he first attended The Loft, David Mancuso’s legendary after hours house party. Inspired by the incredible lights and the tribal rhythms that drove the dancefloor, he opened ‘The Gallery’ at the tender age of 17, and developed a furious style of Dj-ing the likes of which the embryonic disco world in NYC had never seen before. He was among the first to DJ with varispeed turntables, meaning he could mould the beats and melodies of two records so that they matched in a fluid musical flow. So in plain English, this guy helped invent beatmatching, the most basic requirement for any modern DJ> As house legend Frankie Knuckles has testified “ It was like discovering the wheel. He got it right……It was difficult to listen to guys playing in the old style after that”. He made records like “Love Is The Message” or “Love’s Theme” popular hits, simply by playing them to death, making them his anthems. He gave disco legends like Grace Jones and Loleatta Holloway their first live gigs in New York.He also took the art of EQ-ing to another level, playing with the sound to tease out the highs and the lows of each record and push his dancefloor further and further. He taught Larry Levan, legendary producer/remixer and resident at The Paradise Garage, the basics of playing records in a club. His fame and notoriety spread through the five boroughs, and he secured other influential residencies at venues like Le Jardin and Limelight. The consummate showman, he claims to have been the first man to mix on three turntables too. “ I was going from ‘Love Is The Message’ into ‘Girl, You Need A Change Of Mind’ and I had this sound effect of an aeroplane blasting…. They were jumping and screaming so loud the floor started to move!” he says with typical modesty. When disco went overground and Studio 54 opened, it was natural that Siano would become one of it’s residents. He had also moved into production, collaborating with disco scientist Arthur Russell and members of Talking Heads on ‘Kiss Me Again’ by Dinosaur in 1978. With it’s spindly new wave bassline, propulsive rhythms and oddball vocals, the record became a cult hit and went on to sell over 300,000 copies, as well as being an early marker of the explosive cross genre pollination in New York in the late 70’s/early 80’s that would lead to ‘Planet Rock’. He went on to work on a number of productions, with ‘Pick It Up’ by Sofonda C, a Top 10 Billboard hit in 1983, the most successful. After the death of his close friend and fellow DJ David Rodriguez from AIDS in 1984, Siano spent many years working with HIV infected patients and gained a degree in social work. He published the highly regarded, best selling HIV manual “No Time To Wait” in 1993. He stepped behind the decks for the first time in many years on July 19, 1998, at a memorial gig at ‘Body And Soul’ for his friend Larry Levan. More and more gigs followed, stretching from New York to Australia, France, Italy, Croatia and beyond. He also began to produce again, working with Tanaa Gardner, famed for her work with Larry levan on West End in the late 70’s, on her ‘I’m Comin’’ 12 in 1998. He has also set up his own Inspira Records imprint, which has released many of his own house/garage flavoured releases, including his recent LP, “ Live My Life”. The respected archivists of rare soul, funk, disco and reggae, Soul Jazz Records, worked with Nicky on a compilation of Gallery favourites, which was released in October 2004 to much acclaim. The launch party saw him rock 1200 disco-lovers to their foundations in London, and Dublin got a taste of that Siano magic with a fiercely energetic set of classic funk, soul, disco and house in Ri-Ra this time last year...... Furth
About the event : Nicky Siano returns to Ri-Ra as a special guest of Downtownsounds on Friday December 16th. The Legendary New York Party DJ, formerly resident at Studio 54, made his Irish debut at the same venue this time last year. Any fears that he would merely trade on his huge reputation were dispelled with a highly energetic set of classic soul, funk, disco and house.

A-TRAK (KANYE WEST DJ), 6 times world scratch champion : 24th February 2006

Musical style : HIP HOP
Venue : Ri- Ra, Dame Court , Dublin 2
Time : 11.30 til late
Admission : €12.00
Day of week : Friday
Reviews : The child prodigy who Kanye West made his recording and tour DJ - Montreal native Alain Macklovitch (aka DJ A TRAK) - makes plays his first Dublin show in three years when he plays at Ri Ra on Friday week 24th Feb. This is of course as soon as he is finished his show with Kanye at The Point earlier that night. A Trak first came to prominence in 1997 when he shook the hiphop world by winning the World DMC championship - at the age of just 15! He was promptly invited to join Mixmaster Mike and DJ QBert as members of the Invisibl Scratch Picklz before hooking up with DJ Craze a new collective the Allies. The late nineties went on with A Trak continually breaking new world records in scratch DJing - on top of being the youngest ever world champion, he became the first DJ to win all three major titles (DMC, ITF and Vestax) and the first DJ to win six world championships. At age of 18, he decided to retire from scratch-battling. A deeply intelligent and versatile character; A Trak broaden his horizons and musical scope with his live sets now bridging the gap between jaw-dropping turntablism and debauched party-rocking with eclectic sets of bootleg-heavy hip hop, crunk, booty and classic electro, dancehall, 80s funk and anything in between. In touring across the world; he has played renowned hi-brow music festivals such as Coachella and the Montreux Jazz festival. No surprise that when rising hiphop superstar Kanye West spotted A Trak in action in 2004, he asked him to become his DJ and there they set off conquering the world, A Trak\\\'s broad musical knowledge playing a bit part in the scope of Kanye award-winning 2005 album. Other acts who A-Track has collaborated with of late include Common, Diplo, MF Doom and Peanut Butter Wolf. Who in Ireland could open for A-Trak other than Dublinners DJ Flip - who came from nowhere to win the world ITF scratch championship in December 2004, then coming runner up in December 2005. www.djatrak.com www.audioresearch.net For more info/photos/interviews; contact wideo@pod.ie or ph: 01 478 2037

Qool DJ Marv earned his reputation by effortlessly intertwining several musical styles that both captivate and invite you to sing along. Diverse best describes Marv's DJ style with selections spanning many eras and decades of music including Rhythm & Blues, Hip-Hop, Reggae, Latin, House, Jazz, Funk, Rock and Soul classics, and Eclectic beats from around the world. Raised in Philadelphia by what he describes as naturally funky family, Marv's introduction to music came at an early age. Grew up in a house with four aunts and uncles, my parents, and my grandparents, and the way that everyone used to listen to records was on 45s, I could go in any room in my house and hear different sounds from popular soul to more under the surface stuff. That was pretty much an everyday experience. With a regular home diet of Rick James, Parliament/Funkadelic and almost anything on the Philadelphia International label coupled with an extensive family that hardly need any excuse to throw a party, Marv was learning his future trade before even deciding on a career path. Both Marv's academic and musical education continued in New York, where he managed to find ample time to check out the music scene in between studying for his masters.

Reviews : Ex Scratch Pervert Mr Thing has forged his own path in the years since the UK world champion turntablist crew split. Always a more club friendly hip hop / breaks DJ than the other SP’s he currently holds a residency at London super club Fabric and is starting to make some noise in UK hip-hop production circles with mc Yungun plus some high profile remixes. A keen beat digger – he even managed to turn up some in Dublin last time he was here – last year he teamed up with Gangstarr producer DJ Premier to do a joint compilation called ‘The Kings Of Hip-Hop’. Mr Thing aka Mark Bowles, has been Djing since the early 90s making his first appearances at his local club in Tunbridge Wells as part of the Funky Buddha parties .By the late 90s he had teamed up with the rest of the Scratch Perverts – Tony Vegas, Prime Cuts and First Rate winning their first World DMC team championship title in 1999.He followed this up with the UK DMC Championship and third place in the 2000 World DMC. As with the rest of the crew he moved out of the scratch world and has since formed a strong partnership on record and on stage with Yungun. Having just released their second white label together, “Jackin’ 4 Breaks”, the pair are also working on collaboration mixtape as well as their EP, “GMB (Grown Man Business)”. Set for release on Silent Soundz, “GMB” showcases the diversity of Mr Thing’s production prowess Playing Ri Ra, Dame Court on Friday April 7 Mr Thing is one of the rare breed of hip hop djs who combine great records with the old school aesthetic of moving the crowd!. About the event : Don’t believe the hype. Chairman Jefferson Mao is, in fact, Asian, and Mao is his actual birth name. Born in Cambridge, MA, the son of Chinese immigrant he has lived in New York City since 1987 working as a music journalist since the early 90s contributing to Rolling Stone, Spin, Blender, The Source, Vibe and now XXL - home to his monthly indie rap column, Chairman’s Choice. He has also been known to release well-received mix CD’s with great irregularity and his latest, Run For Cover is a delicious collection of obscure cover versions of classic soul ditties. With his old school NY aesthetic and appreciation of the full spectrum of African American music we thought him the perfect candidate to DJ our 5th birthday party! The Chairman is also the one of the creative coloured folks behind Ego Trip magazine (RIP -1994-1998), a zine whose unparalleled rap fanaticism fused with punk rock aesthetics, racial subtexts, and scathing humour exerted an influence that far outreached its circulation. Following that with Ego Trips Book of Rap Lists (St. Martins Press), the Mao executive-produced accompanying soundtrack LP - Ego Trips The Big Playback (Rawkus Records) and the De La Soul Is Dead of the hip hop literary world – Ego Trips Big Book of Racism - the crew finally got the chance to make like real rappers and do a “sell-out” by making television for the VH1 channel resulting in TVs Illest Minority Moments, and the 2005 mini-series, Ego Trips Race-O-Rama which nestle bizarrely beside those four hour Fleetwood Mac specials! When not writing about rap or working on ego trip related projects, Mao may also be found DJing at trendy NYC nightspot APT, where he has held down a bi-weekly Saturday residence for five years alongside the likes of Prince Paul, DJ Spinna and Bobbitto. Special guests have included esteemed folks like Cash Money, 45 King, Jus Blaze, Kenny Dope, Cut Chemist and Tokyo’s DJ Muro as guest selectors. Expect Mao to keep it in the same vein – fresh selections from deep crates of rap, disco, soul, funk and reggae all mixed with old school love! Chairman Mao plays Ri Ra, Dame Court, Dublin 2 on Friday May 12. He assures us he will be in a New York State of Mind. Doors 11:30pm. For further information please email/ring addresses above!

MAD MATS : 19th May 2006

Venue : Ri Ra, Dame Court, D.2
Time : 11.30 til late
Admission : €5.00 b4 12, €10.00 AFTER
Day of week : FRIDAY
About the event : Mad Mats music endeavours started in the mid 80's when he left his break dancing career (Swedish champ 1985!) to become a hip hop and scratch dj at the early hip hop jams in Stockholm. But a trip to London in 1988 and a visit to the notorious Dingwalls (Talkin Loud) where Gilles Peterson & crew also opened up his music senses to leftfield rhythms. After taking an interest in producing hip hop Mats started collecting 'breaks & samples'which later introduced him to the whole spectrum of black dance music. In the early/mid 90's he was also the producer of a hip hop, jazz and soul group called Boogaloo which had great success, especially in Japan where they sold over 30 000 albums. When Mats in the early 90's 're-discoverered' house music (through a 'Louie Vega' mix tape) he has since then been influenced by all forms & shapes of underground club culture. Mats strongest quality is that he can display an impressive variety of music in his DJ sets and is famous in Scandinavia for playing just about anything on a dance floor. Everything from retro to future soul, hip hop, jazz, disco, house, Detroit techno, latin, drum'n'bass, club jazz, electro, samba/bossa, reggae, funk, afro and much more is blended together with a fresh touch of b-boy sensibility. Basically he's a DJ you can book for a straight up house, hip hop or broken beat session but just as well to retro jazz, funk & latin clubs. He has on numerous occasions been voted Sweden's best DJ and is one of the most respected musical figures in Scandinavian club culture. Nowadays Mats runs the internationally known Raw Fusion club once a month in the heart of Stockholm. The club has been running strong for almost 10 years with diverse guest dj's like Joe Claussell, Jay Dee, Kerri Chandler, Peanut Butter Wolf, Roni Size, Theo Parrish, DJ Harvey, Jazzanova, Laurent Garnier, Richard Searling and Carl Craig just to name just a few. The club is a direct reflection of Mats musical personality and has become the by far the most important club for underground dance music in Scandinavia. Mats and his partners have also successfully arranged two international jazz/soul festivals, the first one in 1998 and the second in 2000. Both festivals was a great success and featured artists and DJ's like The Roots, Terry Callier, Gil-Scott Heron, Attica Blues, Faze Action, Gilles Peterson, Jazzanova, Kyoto Jazz Massive, Louie Vega and many more. In 1999 the Fusion imprint released a compilation called 'Fusion A Soul Classics Collection ' via Universal Records which was compiled by Mats himself. The record was mainly sold within Sweden but still managed to sell 10000 units even though the musical message was far from commercially compromised. In 2002 the label transformed into an independent record label, which is simply called Raw Fusion Recordings but is now run by Mats and his partner Peo. Just like the club the label displays a wide mixture of black dance rhythms but always with that extra soulful approach. In 2003 Raw Fusion also started up Jugglin' Rec, a sub-label where you can find more hip hop and soul influenced music. Both labels have gained big respect and are among the most hyped labels on the indie scene with artists like Freddie Cruger aka Red Astaire, Povo, Hearin' Aid, A Bossa Eltrica, Up Hygh, Spiritual South, Speech Defect, 12th Floor, Beatfanatic etc. Mats have also compiled three excellent compilations on the label (Inside Scandinavia Vol 1&2 + Raw Fusion Bass-Ment Classics).

About the event : DJ Woody AKA Woody Madera is one of Britain’s most respected hip hop DJ’s and arguably one of the most innovative and musical turntablists of his generation. Driven by an obsessive quest for originality in the true spirit of hip hop culture, Woody is a one-man movement constantly pushing the envelope in a time when most DJ’s seem content with covering old ground. Responsible for the invention of a host of groundbreaking scratches, beatjuggles and turntablist techniques including his famous signature \\\'Woodpecker\\\' scratch, not many DJ\\\'s can lay claim to having had scratch legend DJ Q-Bert on the telephone asking for tips. He’s toured with One Self (DJ Vadim) and has appeared on vinyl for various labels from Twisted Nerve to Ninja Tunes and has released two mix CDs so far this year covering Demon Boyz to Boards of Canada. Hailing from the grimey northern industrial town of Burnley in England most of the 90\\\'s were spent perfecting his skills by rocking clubs, performing with MC\\\'s, vocalists and live bands, producing mixtapes and laying down cuts in the studio. In 1999 Woody entered his first DJ competition making it straight through to the UK DMC finals, and in 2001 Woody was to become the world’s most successful scratch DJ by gaining more major championship titles than any of his contempoaries. On taking a trip to the mecca of turntablism, San Francisco, Woody made history by becoming the first ever European to take the coveted World ITF title (International Turntablist Federation), following in the footsteps of legendary DJ\\\'s Babu (Dilated Peoples) and A-Trak (Kanye West DJ). The following year saw Woody become 2 times World Champion when he stormed the Vestax Extravaganza World finals beating off competition from 14 countries. Since then Woody has been proving the point that he rocks dancefloors as effectively as he murders DJ\\\'s in battle, sharing the stage worldwide alongside Eminem, Cypress Hill, De La Soul etc. He became resident scratch assassin for Ninjatunes\\\' hip hop super-crew One Self, recording the perfect musical scratchscapes to compliment Vadim’s production on One Self\\\'s debut LP \\\'Children Of Possiblity\\\' released in 2005. As one of the UK\\\'s most successful turntablist exports in the last 5 years Woody has toured relentlessly in various incarnations taking in South Africa, Venezuela, Brazil, India, Trinidad, Russia, Japan, China, Canada and virtually every country in Europe, gaining him a widespread international fanbase. He has released two mixes so far this year with a “A Country Practice” and a UK old school mash up “Bangers and Mash” and with an all new live project planned for 2006 you can expect to hear a lot more from the Wooden one.

His rep gets bigger as he has breaks for days, keeping other DJs guessing and is currently recognised across the worldwide b-boy scene as one of the b-boys favourite DJ's. Reviews : " Jigsaw Music is currently the best night in the UK……. And Mark –E is king of the tripped out groove!" – The Unabombers, Electric Chair, Manchester
About the event : Birmingham lad Mark E has been winning acclaim recently for his reworks of disco and boogie classics for local label Jiscomusic, a spin off of the city's renowned JigsawMusic party. Heavyweight DJ support has come from the likes of Gilles Peterson ( BBC Radio 1), Unabombers ( Electric Chair / XFM, Manchester ), Francois K and Danny Krivit ( Body and Soul, NYC), as well as nu- disco heroes like Lindstrom, Prins Thomas, Metro Area and DJ Harvey. Last year's dazzling rework of Bobby Womack's 'Baby, I'm Scared Of You' began with lush, Detroit – style sweeps of sound, adding crisp drums, hypnotic loops and a drawn out breakdown before the song proper kicked in to cheers and smiles all round...... His latest release on Jisco is a wonderfully spaced out take on Tata Vega's 'Get It Up For Love', where once again he tweaks, twists, loops and adds his own elements to the original to create a thoroughly modern dancefloor monster. Having seen him play a great set of across the board dancing music for Surface/One Track Records in Kennedy's in February, we simply can't wait to let him loose on the Ri-Ra basement. Expect soul, funk, disco, electroboogie and beyond!!

KEB DARGE : 6th August 2006

Venue : Ri Ra, Dame Court, D.2
Time : 11.30 TIL LATE
Admission : €5.00 b4 12, €10.00 after
Day of week : SUNDAY
About the event : Straight out of the Scottish highlands Keb Darge has been buried neck deep in records for over 30 years. Currently the man behind the Jazzman subsidiary label Funk 45 plus Kay Dee records alongside NY DJ extraordinaire Kenny Dope, Keb has done the lot – compilation compiler ( BBE), label owner (Deep Funk / Kay Dee), record dealer, record producer (New Mastersounds), he has toured the world with the obligatory extended stay in Japan and is mentor to the likes of DJ Shadow / Cut Chemist who will be forever playing catch up with the man! Despite the geographical proximity this is incredibly only Keb’s 3rd trip to Dublin. Non trainspotters please take note – even the wall flowers and anoraks wont know the tunes playing but when it sounds this good it doesn’t matter! With a colourful history you couldn’t do justice to here Keb Darge has been a mainstay in the English soul scene since he first started to make his way down to Wigan in the mid 70s. Paying for his records by raiding chemists to supply dancers with- at the time legal – speed, he was forced into temporary retirement in the early 80’s due to a run in with the polis! Out of the scene for some time his interest was awakened by the burgeoning mod scene and he and erstwhile partner Guy Hennigan ended up hitting the motorways of the UK once more with coach loads of Southern mods infusing the scene with much needed energy. His popularity never greater, his first divorce led to him selling his Northern 45s to pay for alimony meaning his time in the Soul scene was up! Chancing upon the “junk” records in his attic a whole new scene was born – Deep Funk. At the time these 45s were considered cheap novelty records so Keb was able to raid other Northern DJs funk collections and hit the US and clean up for next to nothing! It was through filtering through the mountains of 45s that the Deep Funk movement was born spreading across Europe, Japan - where he lived from some time - and across the US via Josh the CA Collector (DJ Shadow) and other dedicated fanatics. In the last 10 years he has done over 10 comps for BBE alongside Pete Rock, RZA, Shadow, run countless clubs in the UK including his long running Funk Friday in Soho’s Madame JoJos, toured the world extensively and inspired a generation of funk fanatics. With such a deep history in Djing it is to the mans credit that he still remains as fresh and enthused as ever and if you’re interested in music from 40’s Rockabilly to 80s modern soul – this will be an all to rare treat in Dublin!

He has recorded his acid-fried dancefloor bombs for a diverse range of house,techno,nu-disco and electronica labels, from Warp, Compost and Output to Wave, Balihu and Nuphonic. His work has been included on compilations by the likes of The Idjut Boys, The Unabombers and Trevor Jackson (Playgroup). A proficient musician, he often adds extra drums or new basslines to his remixes and re-edits, and for years played bass in Jimi Tenor’s band. He recently masterminded the sleazy electrorock MU project with his wife and has also been recording as Syclops for cult London label Tirk. When he dj’s you can expect to hear him zigzag ever so smoothly between between soul, funk, afrobeat, disco, electroboogie, italo and house, demonstrating exactly why he has become such a hero at Manchester's Electric Chair parties and other underground palaces such as London's Fabric.

Despite the geographical proximity this is incredibly only Keb’s 4th trip to Dublin. Keb Darge plays Ri Ra Bank Holiday Sunday Oct 30thth. For info email / ring addresses above!

Day of week : FRIDAY
About the event : Middlesbrough isn't the most interesting of places to be if you're into music, and it certainly wasn't back in '80s when I lived there. Through John Peel I got into a wide variety of music including - although he didn't play much - old jazz, blues and R&B. But in order to hear more of the music I loved I had to move to London, and from there I saved up my money to fly to the US in order to discover and unearth these old and obscure records. . I soon established Jazzman Records to sell or trade the extra copies that I found, and now after over 10 years I have quite a decent collection and many trusted customer & dealer contacts around the world with many well-known DJs, musicians and producers as regular clients It was in the mid-'90s that the records started to become harder to find, but still people wanted them, so the prices started to rise. So I decided to reissue the records that were either most in demand or were so rare that people who would never otherwise get to enjoy hearing them would be able to do so. Recently one rare funk 45 fetched over $4000 on ebay - we acquired the rights to reissue it so now everyone can listen, not just the people who can afford the high prices! Many other people started to reissue records too, and illegal bootlegs are very common, mostly because they did not want to take the time and effort to track down the copyright holder. It does take a lot of effort and cost a lot of time and money, but to me it's worth it. Having met many of the artists and musicians on my travels to the US, I have a respect for them and their music. We are now proud to have 46 titles reissued on the Jazzman series of 45s, and 11 albums on CD. There are also 24 titles on the FUNK45 label, with many more on the way. We also have 18 releases on Stark Reality, our label that issues new music inspired by the old, including recordings by the Soul Destroyers, Nesta and Little Barrie, with more to come soon by Malcolm Catto and a new singer from Germany called Bajka.

Time : 11.30 til late
Admission : €7.00 b4 12, €10.00 after
Day of week : Friday
About the event : "The Hot Mix 5 were amazing, technique-wise: They had two copies of everything, everything was phased, they'd do backspinning and things on every song.Perfect,no mistakes, slamming sh!t, man" - Marshall Jefferson. Downtownsounds is extremely proud to present an exclusive Irish appearance by Chicago turntable legend Farley Jackmaster Funk.As part of the Hot Mix 5 DJ team on Chicago's WBMX Radio in the early 80's, Farley helped redefine the art of mixing with his frenetic turntable skills. His distinctive style had a huge influence on the emerging house scene in Chicago. He would play large chunks of European electropop next to underground disco classics, 'phasing' each record he played ( ie playing two copies of it at the same time to give a hypnotic, wibbly wobbly effect), as well as utilising an 808 drum machine to give records an extra dancefloor kick. With the 808 in tow, he went on to produce many of the genre's early classics, including the timeless 'Love Can't Turn Around', which became the first house record to breach the Top 10 in the UK in 1987. Farley became a born again Christian in 1990, and has been a regular on the global dj circuit ever since, rocking some of the most well known clubs in the world, while still retaining the credibility to rock more underground parties - witness his showstopping turn at a recent Clone Records party in Holland. Expect across the board dancefloor bangers from disco to electropop to italo and house delivered with awesome power and panache by this true legend of the turntables... WWW.DOWNTOWNSOUNDS.ORG

About the event : Representing El Barrio De Surrey Latin percussionist, recording artist and band leader, SNOWBOY, has also been a D.J. since the classic Jazz Funk days of 1978 where he used to hire out the U.K.'s No 1 Black Music night club, THE at the age of 17 for his Jazz Funk nights. An authority on the weird and wonderful world of Jazz Dance (currently researching a book on the U.K scene) he is also a funk and latin specialist. Along with his (and our!) good friend Keb Darge he was one of the OG D.J.'s at the DEEP FUNK night and was a columnist and writer for the world-respected Funk and Hip Hop magazine GRAND SLAM (R.I.P!). Similar to Gilles Peterson he’s kept his finger on the pulse for 30 odd years - Latin, Funk, he is also a member of the Southport Soul Weekender team and one of the first to play West London’s Broken Beat. As a collector, his 30,000 + record collection also covers Old School Rap collection and he constantly delves into his archives. As well as his dj-ing he's a gifted musician in his own right. A percussionist he has toured extensively with Latin artist Eddie Palmeri. He released his first 12 over 20 years ago – Bring Back the Beat – but it is through his association with the Acid Jazz label he's best known. 13 albums and 20 12s deep he’s toured the world mostly with Latin artists plus DJ residences at The Jazz Café, The Hi Hat, Dojo and a regular guest of Keb at Madame Jo Jo’s. He has compiled a number of compilations spanning all types of genres - two Hi Hat compilations already released for Ocho Records, a Washington Go-Go Funk comp - ‘Meet Me At The Go-Go’. This year alone, he has another Hi Hat compilation, a Deep Funk one, two Broken Beat ones and many Fania related Salsa and Latin Jazz compilations as well! So all in all he’s one of us! IDJUT BOYS : 30th March 2007

Time : 11.30 til late
Admission : €7.00 B4 12, €10.00 after
Day of week : Friday
About the event : Next up, we are delighted to welcome the Idjut Boys back to Rí-Rá. Dan and Conrad have defined the stoner disco/house sound since long before it was trendy, and are due a hell of a lot of credit for kickstarting the current "space disco" craze. Having met up through bleary trips to Brighton's Tonka nights in the early 90s (featuring a certain DJ Harvey), the lads soon made a name for themselves with their U-Star night in London. A series of outstanding releases followed on their U-Star and Noid imprints, including the mighty Whoktish, Girth Soup, Turntable Turbulance and an album by the wonderful title Life: The Shoeing You Deserve. Their records display dancefloor nous, production smarts and a wicked sense of humour that has set them far ahead of the pack. The Idjuts' mix albums (most notably Saturday Night Live on Nuphonic, a second installment on Glasgow Underground and the DTS favourite Press Play on Tirk) have showcased their trademark reverb drenched re-edits, featuring their take on tracks by everyone from Tantra, Goody Goody and Haircut 100 to Lindstrom and Aril Brikha. The boys have been busy of late, with a double LP of edits on Noid as Phantom Slasher, together with a sprinkling of 12"s and remixes in the past 18 months that have been permanent fixtures on the downtownsounds jukebox. And with a very fine 12" on Spacid's Radius Records set to drop, not to mention a much anticipated collaboration wth Harvey, they show no signs of letting up. Farley is a hard act to follow, but an Idjuts dj set really is something special. Slaloming through genres and tempos as they see fit, the boys' musical knowledge and feel for the dancefloor are second to none. Their turn at Rí-Rá in May 2005 nearly caused a collective aneurysm, going down in DTS history as one of our best ever parties. But don't take our word for it, have a listen for yourselves:

BENJI B /DJ TU-KI : 8th April 2007

Diversifying the mix slightly the pairs musical understanding went from strength to strength, and when the show moved from Kiss FM to BBC Radio 1, Benji became the youngest ever producer to be making shows for the national station. He broke out on his own when the Beebs internet black music station came online in 2003 where his Deviation show is an essential listen for anyone with an interest in past, present or future beats!
