| |  Ethnic RelationsRelations between people of different ethnic groups are crucial issues in
the world of today. At both the national and international levels, ethnic
conflicts are important issues, impeding effective relations and social
harmony. Although people often believe that we can all get along if we
just try, history tells us that conflict is more likely than harmony in
the context of intercultural contact. How can we get along better with others? The chances for effective and harmonious intercultural relations are
enhanced by knowledge about the dynamics of culture and cross-cultural
relations and preparation for cross-cultural adaptation. My work has
addressed issues of improving intercultural relations on many different levels. Several of my courses (Ethnic Relations in the U.S., Culture and Health) address issues pertinent to enhancing interethnic relations. In support of cross-cultural education and training, I have written several textbooks: American Ethnic History; Cultural Awareness, Sensitivity and Competence; and Culture and Health: Applying Medical Anthropology.
