Published:Â Thursday, August 28EDMONTON - Two brothers, ages five and seven, have died in a farming accident in northern Alberta.
The boys were playing on top of the trailer at about 8 p.m. on Wednesday while an adult was emptying it on a private farm 150 kilometres northeast of Grande Prairie.
The grain trailer is an open container normally used to carry grain from the fields to the farm and is emptied with a sliding trap underneath. The boys fell in and were sucked down into the grain, where they suffocated.
Family members tried to revivie them, as did local paramedics and those from a medical helicopter, but the boys could not be saved.
The wheat harvest is just starting, said McLennan RCMP Sgt. Ged Dentinger.
"We forget that these youngsters don't have the ability to discern these dangerous situations," he added, warning farm families to keep children far away from machinery. "But that's easier said than done."
RCMP are investigating on behalf of the medical examiner but don't foresee laying any criminal charges, Dentinger said. "It's just a bad accident."
