Dinig Sana Kita, Colorum bag film awards in Brussels

Philippine-made films bagged two major awards at the recently concluded International Independent Film Festival in Brussels, Belgium.

Colorum
Colorum is a morality tale plus a palette of colors and a catalogue of angst from ordinary lives that would make Vincent van Gogh envious.
This tragic-comedy portrays the glaring gray patches and shadowy shades in the lives of the two central heroes and several minor characters. [More on 'Colorum']
The Department of Foreign Affairs said the awards were given at a ceremony held lat November 8 at the Centre Culturel Jacques Franck in Brussels.
"Dinig Sana Kita" earned the Grand Prix in the Special Competition – International Deaf Cinema Section, while veteran actor Lou Veloso won the Best Actor award in the International Competition for the film Colorum.
The festival featured more than 60 countries showing more than 100 films in various categories, the DFA said.
Many of these are being shown for the first time in Europe and worldwide.
“It came as a surprise to me because my goal of coming here in Brussels is to learn how deaf films look like and explore the opportunities of bringing Filipino films into the international
scene," Mike Sandejas, director of "Dinig Sana Kita," said in his acceptance speech.
The audience received the film well and brought them to a standing ovation after the screening of the film on November 7, the DFA said.
Making the award more significant is that the Philippines will celebrate Deaf Awareness Week when he arrives in the country.
Sandejas' presence during the festival was made possible through the efforts of the National Commission for Culture and Arts and the Philippine Embassy in Brussels.
Robert Malengreau, Director of the International Independent Film Festival in Brussels, received the Best Actor award on behalf of Veloso.
"Dinig Sana" Kita was the Philippines official entry also to the Toronto International Film Festival, Hawaii International and Mumbai Film Festival.
It is a love story between a deaf boy who loves to dance and a troubled rocker girl who abuses her sense of hearing.
Crossing their paths in a Baguio camp that mixes deaf and hearing kids, both find themselves that they have more in common with each other including love for music.
This was the first Filipino film to have a deaf actor (Romalito Mallari) in a lead role.
The Brussels International Independent Film Festival was first held in 1974 and has become a flagship venue for independent cinema.
It has become a venue where filmmakers can meet and exchange ideas and an oasis of free-minded individuals who come together to inspire the cinema of tomorrow. - GMANews.TV
