The Kwara State government has frowned at the failure recorded in Mathematics and English Language by students in the 2009 WAEC and NECO examinations in the state. The Secretary to the state government, AbdulGaniyu Olododo, expressed the state government’s displeasure on Thursday in Ilorin at the end of a workshop organised for Mathematics and English Language teachers in secondary schools.

Mr. Olododo described Mathematics and English as core subjects “on which all the other subjects are built,” saying the mass failure in the subjects was no longer acceptable to the government.

According to him, the state government will continue to accord education the priority it deserves because the future of the children depends on it.

Mr. Olododo said the workshop was designed to broaden the knowledge of teachers, in addition to equipping them with modern techniques of imparting knowledge in the core subjects. The Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Bolaji Abdullahi, said the workshop was part of the effort to ensure the realisation of the government’s target of 80 per cent pass in the two subjects in 2010.

Mr. Abdullahi expressed hope that the workshop would go a long way in preparing the teachers for the challenges ahead. He advised teachers, who could not cope with the challenges to step aside, adding that the government would not compromise its stand for high quality education.
