Crowds greet heroic Mercian Regiment troops

Published Date:
19 March 2010
Flag-waving residents lined the streets of Matlock to celebrate the homecoming of the heroic Mercian Regiment, following its nine-month tour of Afghanistan.
The troops, who lost five of their comrades during the tour, have been granted the title of Honorary Freemen of the District of Derbyshire Dales.

Private Jacob Cherry, from Buxton, said: "It was really good to see so many people and nice of them to come out for it.

"It's great to hear people saying they are proud of what we have done."

The 20-strong army band and the regiment's mascot sheep, Private Derby 29th, led over 100 soldiers through the town centre.

The march left Causeway Lane football ground at 10.30am on Friday March 19, then troops walked to Crown Square, over Matlock Bridge and down Dale Road to the Cromwell Hotel.
