GOC 57 Mt Div, donates Rs. 5 lakh for development of MMI complex

IMPHAL, March 21: Major general DS Hooda, GOC 57 Mountain Division, visited and inspected the Manipur Mountaineering Institute complex at Lamdan, in the Henglep sub division of Churachandpur district, and announced an amount of Rs. 5 lakhs towards promoting the interest of children interested in adventure sports.

On the arrival the Maj. General, was received by the volunteers of Manipur Mountaineering and Trekking Association, MMTA.

M. ibungochoubi, spokesperson of MMTA briefed the visiting GOC of various projects undertaken by the association, and also future projects it planned.

Gen. Hooda, then toured the MMI complex. Content with the projects taken up by the association, he announced an assistance of Rs. 5 lakhs.

The general further expressed that the people of the state should cooperate with the association as the projects undertaken by the association is for the welfare of the youths of the state.

The announcement of contribution of Rs 5 lakhs could be termed as a first of its kind made by the Indian Army brass in the state.

L. Surjit, president of the association briefed media persons and declared that the Lamdan village chief had donated the land for MMI in a show of goodwill and also added that the association has acquired 250 hectares of land for the complex which has a spider net, Brahma bridge, Para sailing, mini obstacle, rock climbing, artificial rock climbing, jungle survival, etc.

He further declared that the MMTA is trying to undertake projects based on air, land and water. Most land-based projects are complete.



The association has also started construction of Adventure Tourism complex under the Ministry of Tourism and the state government, which could be completed by 2011.

An upcoming project to be executed in the complex is planting of the various indigenous varieties of orchids so as to attract visitors, he said.

Training programme for 70 adventure sportspersons to be selected from all districts of the state will be started soon, he said.
