Everything Odd is new again

The female version of The Odd Couple is coming to the Vic Juba Community Theatre at the end of the month.

"This is really a 90-minute sitcom," said Ralph Troschke, director of the local production. "The play opens in Olive's apartment where she and four girlfriends are playing Trivial Pursuit. Florence charges in and announces she's been thrown out by her husband. She and Olive end up as roommates and the fun begins."

"This play takes a humorous look at relationships. All of the mistakes Florence and Olive made with their husbands, they now make with each other," he said. "It's really very funny and our cast has done a terrific job. I think it's going to be a great show."

The play was written in 1985 by Neil Simon after writing the original play 20 years earlier.

"It's like a modern day Friends sort of thing even though it was written in the 70s," said Jeremy Laurence, who plays one of two Spanish brothers in the production. "It's not a very deep comedy, but it is funny and its replete with one-liners and very witty dialogue ... it's made for people to laugh and have a nice time out."

The show marks Laurence's debut in front of a local audience after years of being active in local theatre behind the scenes.

"I teach university transfer drama, I teach a theatre for kids program and Drama 10, 20, 30 and I've been directing adult drama here for three, four years," said Laurence. "I'm very demonstrative in my classes.

"I've heard over the years from people - including my wife - asking, when are you going to act?"

The local production features Mary Royal, Lindsay Roth as Florence, Jacqueline Bruce, Lindsay Gorkoff, Richelle Verzeau, Lisa Herle, Laurence and Matt Newman.

The production runs Nov. 27 and 28 in the Vic Juba Community Theatre at the Lloydminster campus and Dec. 11 and 12 in Alumni Hall Theatre at the Vermilion campus.

Dinner theatre tickets are $40 per person or $35 for a table of eight or more. Show only tickets are also available for $25 in Lloydminster and $20 in Vermilion.
