A strategic plan for success

With a 25-year history of providing programs and services to support parents as they guide their children's growth and devleopment during the early years of life, Parents as Teachers foresees both challenges and opportunities ahead. A new 3-year strategic plan will enable it to grow, expand and respond to key trends over the next several years.

Families are the top priority:

  1. Increase the number of programs and families served through new products and delivery systems—with an emphasis on vulnerable families.
  2. Implement comprehensive quality improvement and evaluation systems to measure and share the impact of Parents as Teachers.
  3. Promote public policies to advance the Parents as Teachers mission and provide funding for Parents as Teachers programs.
  4. Increase recognition and understanding of Parents as Teachers.
  5. Create the necessary technology infrastructure to support the growing needs of programs and program evaluation.

Why don't communities get it?
Early childhood programs offer biggest bang for the buck.

Early interventions offer much higher economic returns than later ones, says Nobel Laureate economist James Heckman.

Ability gaps show up very early in life. Family environments are major predictors of cognitive and socio-emotional abilities, as well as crime, health and obesity. Early childhood programs offer outstanding economic returns!
