If you could design a healthy fast food menu, what would the menu look like?

March 3, 2010 - 9:33 am 3 Comments

Let’s pretend that you are going to be able to design a fast food restaurant whose menu is tailored to healthy and diet foods. Think in terms of eating in or drive-thru types of foods (must be able to be served through a drive through and eaten in a car). What menu items would you want to see on the menu?
Would you seriously eat at that type of location?
What about foods tailored to people with dietary restrictions? What would be some good and fast foods for them?

I would only eat there if the stuff was fresh and ripe.

Too often I order food (I’m a vegetarian) only to be served stale cheese, tomatoes that are pale pink and have obviously been frozen, wilted sprouts and rock-hard avocado.

Healthy fast food means fresh fast food, and that’s almost impossible to maintain on a large scale basis. It would have to be like in other countries where the cooks go to the market to buy everything fresh every morning. That just isn’t feasible in this country.

Best restaurant (food/service) in Boulder/Denver area?

March 3, 2010 - 9:33 am 4 Comments

I am trying to figure out where to go for an awesome dinner next month. The quality/flavor/creativity is the food is the most important thing to me. Service is second, but should be good. I’ve looked at a ton of restaurants’ menus, from Q’s to Frasca to The Kitchen to The Med, but still want some votes. If someone recommends a restaurant you’d second, please vote for them. The more details about the dishes you ate and why it is the best, the better. Remember, food is king!
Please remember that food is #1 to me. I’ve heard of Casa Bonita, but unfortunately their bad food is legendary!!

Well first question is, does cost matter? Of your Boulder choices Q’s is excellent on all counts, the Med has great food but I’ve had inconsistent service there and it’s loud. I’ve not been to Frasca in ages but remember it was good. The Kitchen is good, but I wouldn’t go for a special meal.

Now if money isn’t an issue, Flagstaff House. It’s exquisite all around. Gorgeous views, excellent service, amazing food. But you pay for it. In Englewood there is Steakhouse 10, one of my top 5 restaurants in town. Small, Greek family owned steakhouse. Great food, excellent service. Order saganki, filet oscar if they have it, and the lobster bisque. Make a reservation early. Only down side is it’s small so can get a little loud and warm. Undici is Italian cuisine in the same area owned by the same family. It’s larger and very lovely. Kevin Taylor in the Hotel Teatro is also renowned, again a bit pricey. Something a little different in LoDo is 9 Doors. A tapas restaurant and bar. Very comfy, lovely food, good service. If you want someting completely different, try Mataam Fez, one in Denver and Boulder. Moroccan cuisine. You’ll think you’re in Morocco sitting on pillows at low tables, eating with your hands, surrounded by fabrics and rugs and authentically dressed servers. A very unique and delicious experience. One more that’s a little different but definitely a great meal for a great price. Assignments is the restaurant of the culinary school in Denver. They only serve a few nights a week and the staff is all students, but the meals are freshly prepared, you can see the kitchen, the menu is always changing and it’s a small intimate space so noise isn’t an issue.

I dine out frequently in the metro area and I also belong to opentable.com which is a great way to check out restaurants. Feel free to email me.

Is there a Thai dish that has sauteed rice noodles, curry, coconut, cilantro and peanut?

March 3, 2010 - 9:33 am 3 Comments

I love sauteed rice noodles (like those in Pad Thai), and i love curry and coconut, basil, bean sprouts, peanuts/peanut sauce, etc… But every Thai restaurant menu i see doesnt serve these ingredients all together in the same dish. Do you know the name of a dish that does?
OR else,,,, Perhaps all the ingredients i mentioned do not go well together??? I dont know because i have never had the opportunity to eat a dish like that. I know i love these ingredients alone or in combos of 3,,,, but what about all of them at once? If you have tried all at once, please tell me if it tastes good and tell me the name of the dish if you happen to know it. I wish i could make it by myself, but i cant cook .

Khao soi is not a fried noodle dish, but a noodle with soup, but the taste and flavor is exactly what you want.

Which is the best Chinese restaurant in or around Southampton, UK?

March 3, 2010 - 9:33 am 1 Comment

For my birthday I’m taking 7 friends out for a Chinese banquet somewhere around Southampton. I don’t want a bog standard menu but plan to give the restaurant a call and discuss a bespoke menu with more authentic dishes. I’ve heard Dragon Palace on Above Bar is good but is there a better restaurant for real Chinese food?

Try the Top Wok.

restaurant wine menus?

March 3, 2010 - 9:33 am 2 Comments

This will probably sound very un-smart hah, but i recently went to a fancy restaurant with some girlfriends, and when reading the menu.. most of which was in spanish we felt a little confused when we saw the wine section..
there was such a long list of words, and we werent sure what it meant.. Is it all the name of the wine? is it the different brands? is it the wine, and the area its from?
we didnt want to ask the waiter.. (he was too cute ;) )
I looked up a menu online… so it one item looked like this..
"muga, reserva, rioja"
i know its silly, but i really want to know what it all means!

Ah, Muga Rioja, one of my favorites.

Rioja is any blended red wine from the Rioja region of Spain. It’s major grape is temperillo(sic).
Spanish wines are classified by quality of the grapes used and how long the wines are aged. The classifications are:

crianza.. reds must be aged at least 2 years, one of which must be in oak barrels

reservas..reds must be aged at least 3 years, one of which must be in oak barrels

gran reservas..must be aged at least 5 years, two of which must be in oak barrels and the remaining 3 years in bottles.

Muga is the producer of the wine
Rioja is the region it is from
Reserva..is described above

How can I advertise my potential side job, as a proof-reader for Chinese restaurant menus?

March 3, 2010 - 9:33 am 2 Comments

I think there’s got to be a little money to be had doing it.

Nobody cares if there is a typo when the order the number 4 special

But if you think there is money in it, then why don’t you go to the restaurants and ask them?
