Princess Ingrid Alexandra of Norway was born 21 January 2004 at 9:13am in Rikshospitalet University Hospital in Oslo. She weighed 3,686 grams (8.13 lb) and was 51 centimetres (20 inches) long.

She is the first child born to Crown Prince Haakon and second to wife Crown Princess Mette-Marit, formerly Mette-Marit Tjessem Høiby. She is a granddaughter of King Harald V and Queen Sonja of Norway and is second in the line of succession to the Norwegian throne after her father. She is styled and titled as Her Royal Highness the Princess Ingrid Alexandra and she has two siblings, an older half-brother, Marius and a younger brother, His Highness Prince Sverre Magnus.

In 1990 the Constitution of Norway was altered, granting equal primogeniture to the Norwegian throne, meaning that the eldest child, regardless of gender, takes precedence in the line of succession. Since this was not done retroactively, the first member of the royal family it applies to is Ingrid. This means that she takes precedence over her younger brother, but her father Haakon continues to take precedence over his older sister, Princess Märtha Louise. Ingrid Alexandra is expected to become Norway's second queen regnant, after Queen Margaret.

Through her father she is a direct descendant of Edward VII, and under the Act of Settlement 1701 is also in the line of succession to the throne of each of the sixteen Commonwealth Realms. The princess, whose name is pronounced ING-ree in Norway, was named in part after her great-grandfather, Olav V of Norway, (who was born Alexander Edward Christian Frederick).

Ingrid was christened on 17 April, 2004. Bishop Gunnar Stålsett officiated in a ceremony in the chapel of the Royal Palace in Oslo. The princess' godparents include her paternal grandfather, King Harald V of Norway; Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark; Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden; Prince Felipe, Prince of Asturias; her aunt, Princess Märtha Louise; and her maternal grandmother, Mrs. Marit Tjessem. She is a fourth cousin to Prince William, second in line for the British throne.

On 3 December 2005, Ingrid Alexandra 's mother, Crown Princess Mette-Marit gave birth to the princess' baby brother, Prince Sverre Magnus. Both Princess Ingrid Alexandra and Prince Sverre Magnus are in the line of succession to the British Throne; however, in that context Prince Sverre Magnus takes precedence over his older sister.
