Jonathan Roger Whiteway pleaded guilty to second-degree murder today in Newfoundland Supreme Court in Gander in connection with the 2008 shooting death of his stepmother Dianne Whiteway.
The case has now been set over to June 3 for facts and a sentencing hearing.
Whiteway was originally charged with first-degree murder in the March 19, 2008, shooting. The Crown, however, agreed to allow him to plead guilty to the lesser offence of second-degree murder, which was accepted by Justice Raymond Whalen. Second-degree murder carries a mandatory life sentence with no eligibility for parole for at least 10 years. |
