| SHALOM OF SAFED (1887-1980) is Israel’s most renowned artist. His paintings, lithographs, and tapestries have been exhibited in prominent galleries all over the United States and Europe and are in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art (New York) and the Centre Pompidou (Paris), among many others. He has been the subject of over a dozen one-man museum shows. Delicate, dramatic, brimming with color, Shalom’s work fuses two, often distinct, paths to transcendence: art and faith. His scenes from the history of biblical Israel, like his tender renderings of family life, reflect a master artist’s passionate engagement with the sacred texts and customs of Judaism, raising the familiar and the particular to the realm of the universal. The lithographs and posters pictured here have been made newly available from the final lot of the artist’s publisher and personal representative and have been selected by the editors of COMMENTARY for this exclusive offering. The lithographs, numbered and signed by hand, were printed by Atelier Mourlot in Paris in a minimum of 25 colors on Arches paper; the plate-signed posters are printed on Rives paper. Supplies of both are limited.
