First impression: Spoon at the WorkPlay soundstage

Spoon is a clever rock band with good instincts and a compelling, staccato sense of rhythm. Spoon came to Birmingham on the heels of its kickoff performance at the South by Southwest Music and Media Conference.

For these and other reasons, the group's 90-minute set at the WorkPlay soundstage hit me in exactly the right way Friday night.

I'll write more tomorrow -- it's late and I need some time to ponder -- but for now, my biggest dilemma is deciding on four or five stars for this 10:45 p.m. show.
