Subscribe to RSS feeds from ReliefWeb
What is RSS?It stands for Really Simple Syndication, and is an easy way of receiving new content from your favourite sections of ReliefWeb. RSS feeds contain headlines, a summary and a link to the article/map on the website. Subscribing to an RSS feed keeps you up to date with the latest news, without having to constantly revisit the site to check for updates. How do I use RSS?You need a news reader (also called an ‘aggregator’), which will check for and inform you of new content in the RSS feed. For Windows users, there are applications such as FeedDemon, and for Mac OS X, there is NetNewsWire, NewsFire and Safari RSS. Firefox users can also download extensions such as Sage and Lektora to allow them to read RSS feeds in the browser. Alternatively, Bloglines is an online service which eliminates the need for downloading an application. Once you have chosen a news reader, please choose the available feeds on the right. If you click on the RSS button you can subscribe to the feed in various ways, including by dragging the URL of the RSS feed into your news reader or by cutting and pasting the same URL into a new feed in your news reader. Modern web browsers, including Firefox, Opera and Safari, automatically check for feeds for you when you visit our website. An RSS icon is displayed in the URL bar which you can then click on to get the feed. ![]() Fig. 1 - RSS auto-discovery can be found in the URL bar on modern browsers. Can I make my own RSS feeds? You can create your own RSS Feed by using the ReliefWeb search engine. The first step is to choose a search term, and type it into the search engine as normal. Review the results, and if they accurately reflect the topic you have chosen you can now use the RSS feed link to add the selection to your news reader, or to your website. You can refine your search by using the Advanced Search engine. ![]() Fig. 2 - You will find an RSS feed link with every search you do. |
