NFL - Sports Rumors

“BradMinnesota Vikings coach Brad Childress is reportedly close to getting a contract extension, according to the St. Paul Pioneer Press.

The extension is expected to be signed soon but it isn't clear how long the extension is for or how much money Childress will be taking to the bank with this one. It should be announced right at season's end before the playoffs begin.

These days, Childress supposedly makes $2 million a year, which is actually the lowest in the NFC North division. He'll supposedly get at least twice that in his next deal.

Wonder if he would have gotten this deal if Sage Rosenfels(notes) or Tarvaris Jackson(notes) had been his starting quarterback this year instead of Brett Favre(notes).

I still think that if we dont win the superbowl this year, he should be fired for his past failures. He has gotten too many chances, IMO.

This is a huge disastor. This guy doesnt have what it takes to really seal the deal & win a Superbowl. Bad offensive calls, an inability to put the nail in the coffin, liberal use of the "prevent" defense and as user "P M" stated once Favre is gone the dream is over. Well at least it will give us Vikings fans a reason to say good bye to the team now that they wont renew the lease with the Metrodome and will probably move to LA. Its like years of drama building to one glorious heartbreaking finish. Unbelievable.

I am a viking fan...but chilly is not a great coach. As Coach Dday mentioned....too much Prevent Defense that allowed us to get our butts kicked by the eagles in the first round of the playoffs last year and darned near ruined several games this year. Bad play calling on offense (I will admit appears to be getting better, but how much of that is Favre's audibles?). I will admit that Chilly does have an eye for talent, but not the ability to develop it. Exhibit A...Tavaris Jackson. This guy has the tangible skills it takes to be a great qb. Problem is, he doesn't have the intangible qualities of a great qb. He gets shaken up worse than a soda can in a paint mixer. His awareness in the pocket isn't that great, either, but isn't exactly horrible.
Point being, Childress is a decent assistant, but not head coach.

Three words sums up this blog.....................DON"T DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!
In the blog posted yesterday Favre reportedly said, his return next year depends on which players, and the coach that's in place in 2010. That does not sound like a vote of confidence for Childress to me !!........How about you Zigi, do us all a favor and,.................................DON"T DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am a life-long Vikings fan. As much as I am enjoying seeing the Vikings win and loved being wrong about Favre, (yes, I know the season is still young) but I was afraid the numbers in the win column might make Ziggy and Co think about extending his contract. Does anybody remember the majority of the fans were calling for his head last season?
The vikings have played down to their competition, and played sloppy at times. Were it not for an audible against San Francisco and a missed Fieldgoal by the Ravens, Would they still be even thinking of an extension?

EVERYONE on this board is right.... i guarantee you any other coach in the league, with the exception of that buffoon in oakland, could have a record the vikings have with this team.. his playcalling is an ATROCITY to football-dom.. i've said it a million times: my nightmare has always been that they would just win enough games for him to keep his job. i rooted against them last year so the ownership would have to buck up and make the decision to let kling out the door but that didn't happen. i don't think the ownership is all that great on this issue.. i think he's got some wool pulled over some eyes, for sure.. let me tell you this too..other coaches would have clue how to use a.p. properly.. literally, he should have 300 yd. game by now, he's that good.. there is no imagination whatsoever in klink's playcalling. he's a freakin' coward calling plays. . and to chris g: i'm certainly no fan of tavaris, but i feel bad for him and i do think he's far better than his reputation. . you know who did this to tj: klink..
tj was a roll out, not a pocket passer.. he's pretty better when he's moving and idiot klink didn't know this.. hell, he drafted him for cryin' out loud.
as much as i deplore seeing #4 in purple, he's played about 1000x better than i thought.. even if they win the sb, i still won't be happy.. we did it with green bay's hand-me-downs. and that stinks.
don't sign klink.. hold out for a real coach, please.

I don't think childress is that bad of a coach as far as his system goes he is a x and o's caoch not much of a leader and thats something else favre has brought to this team someone to get in line and follow with. After this year you can't fire him though thats like us in detroit no matter how good of a coach he might have made we couldn't keep marenelli after 0-16 just like you can't win you division and fire your coach especially after the way they are playing on both sides of the ball...but I would bet the extension isn't more than a year or 2 because if he leaves favre will too.

I have a really good idea actually. If Favre really wants to retire after this year, offer that man the QB coach job... He could pass on his knowledge to our young QB's for the next 5 years.

You guys are all idiots. Please go find another team to cheer for. You are giving real Viking fans a bad name. "Even if they win the SB, I still won't be happy." That line says it all. What a retard. Childress will probably be voted coach of the year for what he has done. Their performance this year proves that we were just a QB away from being great. Childress went out and made that happen. Childress drafted AD while 6 teams sh*t themselves. Childress drafted Harvin while 21 teams poked their noses. Childress brought in Hutch and Allen. Favre said he would consider returning depending on the players who stay and who is coach, meaning if Childress stays! He signed here in the first place because of Childress!!
Really guys, your combined IQ's would be better served in Oakland or Cleveland.

@ 13 Matt A.......You make a good point, he has signed a significant amount of good players, but that's it !!, he does not have the talent to coach those players, they are out there performing on the shear talent they posses, what he can't do is coach all that talent to perform at it highest level, he is to predictable, to mediocre, just to much playing not to lose, with no imagination on calling play to win. example !st down, AP, 2nd down AP 3rd down. pull out AP, pas to Harvin or Sincoe.......Punt if 1st down not made. Yes it works to a certain degree, but it will not work agianst the top level teams. That why AP's running stats are so low, defenders are keying in on him, on 1st and 2nd down. the coaching is just too Mundane, period

AP's stats are low? 11 rushing TD's in 9 games. Over 900 yards rushing, 2nd in the league. What we have now is balance on offense. For all the complaining about offensive imagination, the Vikes top the league in explosive plays (plays over 20 yards). Whats wrong with AP to the right, AP to left, Rice over the middle first down? If they cant stop it, who cares how predictable it is. All Childress has done has improve this team talent wise, character wise and record wise each year. What more does he have to do? According to #9 on here, not even winning the super bowl would be enough. That's just crazy.
Childress is building this team to win every year. He's brought in significant players through FA and had some tremendous drafts. People have to understand that their will be growing pains when you bring in a new coach. It takes time to get your personnel that fits your scheme. Now Childress has it. And now youre looking at one of the best Viking teams ever.

Matt A, i totally agree with you, we are vastly improved over the mike tice era of football. Each draft we seem to get the best quality of player for the position we need (i.e AD, Loadholt, Harvin and even third rounders like Rice and Asher Allen(?). Next year we will draft a QB who will have one year under Favre to learn and will then be our starter for the next decade. The core group Chilly brought in will be here for at least 4-5 more years, about 3 of which they will be in their prime! Allen will be a great player to take over for winfield in a couple years and we will still be able to draft more quality players. I think this team will win the division the next three or four years easily and either this year or in the next few we will finally have that superbowl!

@ 13 Matt & 16 joe..........All this was done against weaker team, Lions (2), browns, Rams, 49ers, Packers (2), Ravens who are so-so. He does not have the knowledge to coach above the level of just being mediocre, and the better teams will prove it in the long run, plus the majority of thus wins against weaker teams was no cake walk except for the Rams game. Look what happen when they played the only team (Steelers) with a winning record, they lost., His play calling for rushing has improved, were as last year AP ran 90% of the time to the left, and 10% to the right, Childress with his enovated skills toke the giant step, and now it's more like 80/20% to the left, now thats brilliance at its best, or should I say at his best. One good note thu, AP is 2nd leading rusher in NFL, sorry i was going by what the announcers were saying at the start of the game, that AP was in 8th, I didn't realize he move up that far
