Nov 16, 2009Are you willing to pay for WiFi? I understand why WiFi Internet service is so appealing to travellers. Nothing helps pass the time or keeps you better connected on the go than logging onto your laptop or mobile and browsing the 'Net from a slow chugging train or crowded airport. It's not surprising, then, that from VIA Rail to Pearson Airport, a bevy of companies are staying connected for your benefit. Some charge for this service - 30 days of unlimited usage on board VIA costs $29.95 - while others offer complimentary Internet. Google hopes to entice Internet addicts by offering free WiFi service at 47 airports across the United States until Jan. 15. The only catch is a good one. Google hopes users will make a voluntary donation to either Engineers Without Borders, the One Economy Corporation or the Climate Savers Computing Initiative for the free service. I never purchase Internet service when travelling, whether at the airport or at my hotel. I figure I should be able to go a week without checking my Facebook. Do you willingly pay for WiFi service? - Nicole Feenstra Comments:Comment from: I used to but nowadays it's cheaper to pay the data roaming fees on your smart phone. WiFi access fees at terminals and hotels can sometimes be exhorbitant and the terms are usually set to deliver maximum profits. For example, you can pay $10 for 24h at an airport but only need it for about 5 minutes. On the other hand, Rogers charges $0.06 per KB for US roaming if you have a data plan. As long as you're not using your smart phone to watch feature length movies, you should be fine.
