Files for deletion

Files for deletion (FfD) is for listing images and other media files which are unneeded. Files that have been listed here for more than 7 days are eligible for deletion if there is no clear consensus in favour of keeping them or no objections to deletion have been raised. To quote the non-free content criteria, "it is the duty of users seeking to include or retain content to provide a valid rationale; those seeking to remove or delete it are not required to show that one cannot be created — see burden of proof." For undeletion requests, first contact the administrator who deleted the file. If you are unable to resolve the issue with that administrator, the matter should be brought to deletion review.

If you have questions if something should be deleted, consider asking at Media Copyright Questions.

Examples of what you may request here

  • Obsolete - The file has been replaced by a better version.
  • Orphan - The file is not used on any pages in Wikipedia.
  • Unencyclopedic - The file doesn't seem likely to be useful in any Wikimedia project.
  • Low quality - The file is of an extremely low resolution, distorted, or has other physical image quality concerns.
  • Copyright violation - The file might be used in violation of copyright.

[edit] What not to list here

I. For speedy deletion candidates, do not use this page; instead use {{db|reason}}. See the criteria for speedy deletion. These are: duplicates (where both files are on Wikipedia), thumbnails, broken files, non-existent files, non-commercial, "by permission" files and files which are not an image, sound file or video clip and have no encyclopedic use.

II. Files that have no source, or have an unknown copyright, or are unused or replaceable non-free, or are non-free without rationale can be marked so that they will be deleted after a week, and should not be listed on this page. Add one of the following to the file page:

  1. {{subst:nsd}} if a file has no source indicated
  2. {{subst:nld}} if a file has a source but no licensing information
  3. {{subst:orfud}} if a file has a non-free copyright tag but isn't used in any articles
  4. {{subst:rfu}} if a file has a non-free copyright tag but could be replaced by a free file
  5. {{subst:dfu|reason}} if a file has a non-free copyright tag but the rationale isn't sufficient or is disputed
  6. {{subst:frn}} if a file has no non-free use rationale

If the source or licensing information of an image marked as being freely licensed is disputed, please list the file on Possibly unfree files

III. Redundant or duplicate files do not have to be listed here. Please use

  1. {{isd|Full name of file excluding the "File:" prefix}} for speedy deletion if the other file is on Wikipedia, not on Commons
  2. {{subst:ncd|image name on Commons}} if the file now exists on Commons, or {{subst:ncd}} for files with the same name on Commons. (Don't nominate protected images, they are usually locally uploaded and protected since they are used in an interface message or in a highly used template, thus they are high-risk.)

IV. For blatant copyright infringements, use speedy deletion by tagging the file {{db-f9}}

V. Suspected copyright violations shouldn't be listed here.

  1. If a file is listed as public domain or under a free license, but lacks verification of this (either by an OTRS ticket number or a notice on the source website), tag it as {{subst:npd}}.
  2. For other suspected copyright infringements or licensing issues, use Wikipedia:Possibly unfree files.

VI. Files that are hosted on Wikimedia Commons cannot be deleted via this process. Please use the Commons deletion page instead.

VII. If a file is appropriately licensed and could be usable elsewhere, consider copying it to the Wikimedia Commons instead of listing it for deletion. Once copied to the Commons, it is eligible for speedy deletion per criteria 8 for files.

Instructions for listing files for deletion

To list a file:
1
Edit the file page.

Add {{ffd|log=2009 November 22}} to the file page.

2
Create its FfD subsection.

Follow this edit link and list the file using {{subst:ffd2|File_name.ext|Uploader= |Reason= }} ~~~~

Leave the subject heading blank.

If the file has been replaced by another file, name the file that replaced it in your reason for deletion. Refer below for a list of other common reasons.

3
Give due notice.

Inform the uploader by adding a message to their talk page using {{subst:fdw|File_name.ext}}

  • Remember to replace "File_name.ext" with the name of the image or media
  • For multiple images by the same user, use {{subst:fdw-multi|First_file.ext|Second_file.ext|Third_file.ext}} ~~~~ (can handle up to 26)

If the image is in use, also consider adding {{ifdc|File_name.ext|log=2009 November 22}} to the caption(s), or adding a notice to the article talk pages.

State the reasons why the file should be deleted. Some common reasons are:

  • Obsolete - The file has been replaced by a better version. Indicate the new file name (often abbreviated OB)
  • Orphan - The file is not used on any pages in Wikipedia. (If the file is only available under "fair use", please use {{subst:orfud}} instead). Please consider moving "good" free licensed files to Commons rather than outright deleting them, other projects may find a use for them even if we have none; you can also apply {{Copy to Wikimedia Commons}} . (often abbreviated OR, not to be confused with original research which generally doesn't apply to images)
  • Unencyclopedic - The file doesn't seem likely to be useful in this encyclopedia. Images used on userpages should generally not be nominated on this basis alone unless the user is violating the Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not policy by using Wikipedia to host excessive amounts unencyclopedic material (most commonly private photos). (often abbreviated UE)
  • Low quality - The image is of an extremely low resolution, distorted, or has other physical image quality concerns. (often abbreviated LQ)
  • Copyright violation - The file might be used in violation of copyright. (often abbreviated CV)

These are not the only "valid" reasons to delete a file. Any properly explained reason can be used. The above list comprises the most common and uncontroversial ones.

Since abbreviated deletion reasons will not be familiar to most Wikipedians, especially newbies, please consider using full words. A few extra keystrokes now can save paragraphs of explanation to a panicked uploader wondering what's wrong with their image.

If you remove a file from an article, list the article from which you removed it so there can be community review of whether the file should be deleted. This is necessary because file pages do not remember the articles on which the file were previously used.

[edit] Instructions for discussion participation

In responding to the deletion nomination, consider adding your post in the format
* '''View''' - Reasoning ... -- ~~~~
where "Delete", "Keep", "Comment", or something else may replace "View". In posting their reasoning, many editors use abbreviations and cite to the following:

Remember that polling is not a substitute for discussion. Wikipedia's primary method of determining consensus is through editing and discussion, not voting. Although editors occasionally use straw polls in an attempt to test for consensus, polls or surveys sometimes impede rather than assist discussion. They should be used with caution, and are no more binding than any other consensus decision.

[edit] Instructions for closing discussions

Nominations should be processed for closing after being listed for 7 days following the steps at Deletion Process.

[edit] Old discussions

The following discussions are more than 7 days old and are pending processing by an administrator:

For older nominations, see the archives.

[edit] File:Hasek hull goal.jpg

File:Hasek hull goal.jpg (delete | talk | history | logs) - uploaded by Wafulz (notify | contribs).
  • File was tagged with relative speedy deletion, with the rationale "The image shows an iconic moment but nothing in the articles suggest the image itself is iconic, nor is the image essential to critical commentary." I found this unconvincing, so I brought it here for discussion. I am neutral to this file's deletion. — ξxplicit 00:21, 16 November 2009 (UTC)
  • Delete - I think that the text used adequately describes the situation. Someone could also create a free diagram showing the relative positions of things. Image can be replaced with free content and fails WP:NFCC#1 - Peripitus (Talk) 11:24, 16 November 2009 (UTC)
  • Keep. It passes WP:NFCC#1 just fine - there is really no way a diagram could convey the situation as well. If you really wanted to you could argue that Tank Man could be replaced by a diagram too. Additionally, the article explains pretty clearly that the goal won the Stanley Cup, which is about as important as goals get....-Wafulz (talk) 02:54, 18 November 2009 (UTC)
  • Comment - The file needs a separate, detailed, named rationale for each time it is used per WP:RAT.--Rockfang (talk) 03:50, 19 November 2009 (UTC)
  • Keep Passes WP:NFCC. A Stop at Willoughby (talk) 03:48, 20 November 2009 (UTC)

  • Although the image may show a significant, unpeatable moment, there is no indication that the image itself is notable, and there is no contextual significance to the image other than to illustrate accompanying text. Mosmof (talk) 07:42, 17 November 2009 (UTC)
  • Keep As noted in the FU rationale, the image itself is considered iconic, and text alone cannot capture the emotion of the moment, which is considered one of the greatest in hockey history. It is used exclusively in an article on hockey history in a section that specifically discusses the event. As to the notability of the image itself: [1], [2], [3], [4], [5], [6]. It is the image of the event, and its enduring fame is very easy to show. Resolute 14:54, 17 November 2009 (UTC)
  • Keep per Resolute, this is an iconic image that is pretty much the image of the event, and pictures can convey alot that words cannot, and this is one of those situations. -DJSasso (talk) 16:31, 17 November 2009 (UTC)
  • Comment: I stand corrected - image itself is pretty iconic and notable. But as far as I can see, there is no mention of the photograph or its notability within the section. It seems that the image is being used to illustrate the event rather than to illustrate itself. Non-free images aren't used to illustrate what is already described in news reports or "capture the emotion of the moment". Given the sources already cited in the rationale, it probably wouldn't be too hard write a section about the photograph. I'd be happy to do it when I have a spare 20 minutes, but I'd defer to editors who've already worked on the article. --Mosmof (talk) 00:56, 18 November 2009 (UTC)
  • I was figuring you might say that. ;) I'll add a sentence or two on the NHL history article, likely tomorrow, to satisfy this. The image itself could (and should) get greater coverage on the Summit Series article, but that likely wont happen for a bit. Resolute 01:02, 18 November 2009 (UTC)

  • Comment wouldn't it make more sense to crop out the watermark rather than rush to delete these? Resolute 15:46, 17 November 2009 (UTC)
    • Comment Cropping would be the cheap option because most are pretty well composed; however they're also over processed, and considering I would've transferred them to the commons had this (and the copyright graphics) not been the case (meaning they would be deleted anyway) - I think deleting them now would save a lot of hassle... and a bit of drive space. oneblackline (talk) 17:01, 17 November 2009 (UTC)
As for drive space: images are not usually totally erased, I managed to have File:Bmk.JPG restored in August 2009 after it was mistakenly deleted in September 2008. Hekerui (talk) 17:30, 17 November 2009 (UTC)
Perhaps the deleted files are simply removed from public access and retained for a set period (say 12 months) in case of exceptional circumstances... e.g. the realisation that a deleted image was the last unique image of a notable person before their death, or a building before demolition... but I'm not sure this would be an efficient policy; and would seem to be taking too much responsibility for image makers.oneblackline (talk) 17:17, 18 November 2009 (UTC)
Like any other edit, an image is permanently retained. It is simply hidden from view unless un-deleted. Resolute 20:42, 18 November 2009 (UTC)
It the problem that a) the work is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 License, or b) the watermark. If b), cropping would be sensible. Power.corrupts (talk) 09:14, 19 November 2009 (UTC)
In this case perhaps cropping would be acceptable, but others are also over-manipulated. All the users images I've nominated for deletion are attentively composed and the cropping would eliminate this, so I thought it would be considerate to allow Dabbishaw to correct the images himself and upload them straight to the commons. oneblackline (talk) 16:04, 21 November 2009 (UTC)

    • Keep Looked around for other Austrian stamps on Commons and found File:Stamp Austria 1964-1193-UPU.jpg - stamps are in public domain. Tried to copy template {{PD-AustrianGov}} but it is not recognized in Wikipedia. Solution: Transfer to Commons and add the template there. I don't know how to operate the bot that does that. To ww2censor: I'm on/off Wikipedia depending on other committments; I believe it would be more constructive for the Encyclopedia to leave a note on my talk page, asking for clarification, instead of hacking content away with only seven days notice. Power.corrupts (talk) 08:53, 18 November 2009 (UTC)
  • Comment actually the use of the {{PD-AustrianGov}} template might be an invalid licence for Austrian stamps even though I was the editor who specifically added that template to commons:File:Stamp Austria 1964-1193-UPU.jpg but now think was incorrect. It appears that interpretation of Austrian law is too liberal to include stamps as official works: if they have been published as part of a law or official decree or edict, or if they have been released as an official announcement or for public information. ww2censor (talk) 05:14, 19 November 2009 (UTC)
  • Wouldnt a 100 years commemoration for somebody's death qualify as the latter, public information? I would still say that the existing non-free rationale, if relevant at all, is quite solid. Power.corrupts (talk) 09:07, 19 November 2009 (UTC)

Google searching for provenance of these images is a poor substitute for off-line digging. • Unnecessary non-free screenshot of an animated TV character. Character's article Kim Possible (character) is already sufficiently illustrated by another, more characteristic, image in the infobox. This one is ostensibly meant to illustrate the fact that the character also appears as a chearleader, a piece of information that is only of marginal relevance to the article and not in need of visual support to be understood. Fut.Perf. 10:19, 20 November 2009 (UTC)
  • Keep, illustrates Kim in the "other" part of her life that the text explains as being the very reason she has the physicality to pursue her "more characteristic" side, "Kim is extremely athletic and has excellent reflexes that have been honed through years of cheerleading practice". Visual support is necessary to show the differences between her "crimefighting side" and the "normal cheerleader side", akin to showing Batman/Bruce Wayne with and without his batsuit and mask. :) Dreadstar 17:23, 20 November 2009 (UTC)

Unlike in the Batman/Bruce Wayne example cited by Dreadstar, the "crimefighter" and the "normal life" side of this character do not differ in terms of physical presence and persona – or if they do, the article isn't saying anything about that. The existing image at the top of the article gives me a concrete enough impression of the character's physical persona that I can vividly imagine her in any normal life role, including that of a cheerleader, without any difficulty. The second image thus adds nothing. Fut.Perf. 08:15, 21 November 2009 (UTC)

  • Screenshot of web browser's ACID test result. I would dispute that this serves any real purpose to the Flock article. [Belinrahs|talktomeididit] 18:01, 20 November 2009 (UTC)

Today is November 22, 2009. Put new nominations in Wikipedia:Files for deletion/2009 November 22 -- (new nomination)

If the current date's page has been started without the header, apply {{subst:ifd log}} to the top of the day's page.

Please ensure "===November 22===" is at the very top of the new page so that internal page links from the main Files for deletion page (the one you're on now) work.
