Wikipedia:Files for deletion
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
| ↓ | Skip to table of contents | ↓ |
Files for deletion Files for deletion (FfD) is for listing images and other media files which are unneeded. Files that have been listed here for more than 7 days are eligible for deletion if there is no clear consensus in favour of keeping them or no objections to deletion have been raised. To quote the non-free content criteria, "it is the duty of users seeking to include or retain content to provide a valid rationale; those seeking to remove or delete it are not required to show that one cannot be created — see burden of proof." For undeletion requests, first contact the administrator who deleted the file. If you are unable to resolve the issue with that administrator, the matter should be brought to deletion review. If you have questions if something should be deleted, consider asking at Media Copyright Questions. | Examples of what you may request here
| ||||||
[edit] What not to list hereI. For speedy deletion candidates, do not use this page; instead use {{db|reason}}. See the criteria for speedy deletion. These are: duplicates (where both files are on Wikipedia), thumbnails, broken files, non-existent files, non-commercial, "by permission" files and files which are not an image, sound file or video clip and have no encyclopedic use. II. Files that have no source, or have an unknown copyright, or are unused or replaceable non-free, or are non-free without rationale can be marked so that they will be deleted after a week, and should not be listed on this page. Add one of the following to the file page:
If the source or licensing information of an image marked as being freely licensed is disputed, please list the file on Possibly unfree files III. Redundant or duplicate files do not have to be listed here. Please use
IV. For blatant copyright infringements, use speedy deletion by tagging the file {{db-f9}} V. Suspected copyright violations shouldn't be listed here.
VI. Files that are hosted on Wikimedia Commons cannot be deleted via this process. Please use the Commons deletion page instead. VII. If a file is appropriately licensed and could be usable elsewhere, consider copying it to the Wikimedia Commons instead of listing it for deletion. Once copied to the Commons, it is eligible for speedy deletion per criteria 8 for files.
Instructions for listing files for deletion To list a file:
State the reasons why the file should be deleted. Some common reasons are:
These are not the only "valid" reasons to delete a file. Any properly explained reason can be used. The above list comprises the most common and uncontroversial ones. Since abbreviated deletion reasons will not be familiar to most Wikipedians, especially newbies, please consider using full words. A few extra keystrokes now can save paragraphs of explanation to a panicked uploader wondering what's wrong with their image. If you remove a file from an article, list the article from which you removed it so there can be community review of whether the file should be deleted. This is necessary because file pages do not remember the articles on which the file were previously used.

[edit] Instructions for discussion participation
In responding to the deletion nomination, consider adding your post in the format* '''View''' - Reasoning ... -- ~~~~
where "Delete", "Keep", "Comment", or something else may replace "View". In posting their reasoning, many editors use abbreviations and cite to the following:
- Wikipedia:NFCC#1 - Free equivalent is/is not available
- Wikipedia:NFCC#8 - Significance
- Wikipedia:Non-free content#Images 2 - Unacceptable image use
Remember that polling is not a substitute for discussion. Wikipedia's primary method of determining consensus is through editing and discussion, not voting. Although editors occasionally use straw polls in an attempt to test for consensus, polls or surveys sometimes impede rather than assist discussion. They should be used with caution, and are no more binding than any other consensus decision.
[edit] Instructions for closing discussions
Nominations should be processed for closing after being listed for 7 days following the steps at Deletion Process.

[edit] November 16
[edit] File:Hasek hull goal.jpg
- File was tagged with relative speedy deletion, with the rationale "The image shows an iconic moment but nothing in the articles suggest the image itself is iconic, nor is the image essential to critical commentary." I found this unconvincing, so I brought it here for discussion. I am neutral to this file's deletion. — ξxplicit 00:21, 16 November 2009 (UTC)
- Delete - I think that the text used adequately describes the situation. Someone could also create a free diagram showing the relative positions of things. Image can be replaced with free content and fails WP:NFCC#1 - Peripitus (Talk) 11:24, 16 November 2009 (UTC)
- Keep. It passes WP:NFCC#1 just fine - there is really no way a diagram could convey the situation as well. If you really wanted to you could argue that Tank Man could be replaced by a diagram too. Additionally, the article explains pretty clearly that the goal won the Stanley Cup, which is about as important as goals get....-Wafulz (talk) 02:54, 18 November 2009 (UTC)
- Comment - The file needs a separate, detailed, named rationale for each time it is used per WP:RAT.--Rockfang (talk) 03:50, 19 November 2009 (UTC)
Keep Passes WP:NFCC. A Stop at Willoughby (talk) 03:48, 20 November 2009 (UTC)- Delete An oversight on my part...does not meet WP:NFCC#10. If this is fixed, I may reconsider my vote. A Stop at Willoughby (talk) 06:18, 20 November 2009 (UTC)

- Currently unused in the article the rationale is written for, no rationale given for the current use in Aoi Miyazaki. In any case, lacks contextual significance and the rationale seems rather specious and appears completely unrelated to the image. Mosmof (talk) 05:48, 17 November 2009 (UTC)

[edit] File:Gourmetcharacterschart.jpg
- Image without contextual significance. A character link tree/diagram could be created without use of non-free images. Mosmof (talk) 06:02, 17 November 2009 (UTC)
- Keep. Illustrates the relationship between the characters of the drama. A character link tree/diagram could be created without use of non-free images. But there isn't any without non-free images so it can stay. Colleen16 (talk) 21:04, 17 November 2009 (UTC)

[edit] File:NCAA Football 2001 Coverart.jpg
- A video game cover image is unnecessary to communicate to readers that Shaun Alexander appeared on a video game cover. Mosmof (talk) 07:17, 17 November 2009 (UTC)
- Originally it was on the NCAA Football 2001. I guess someone added it to the players article and then when the game got merged it was just completely overlooked. I definately support deletion as the uploader. Salavat (talk) 07:25, 17 November 2009 (UTC)
[edit] File:MizzouSI.jpg

[edit] File:Th 2pts.jpg

[edit] File:Paul Henderson 1972.jpg
- Although the image may show a significant, unpeatable moment, there is no indication that the image itself is notable, and there is no contextual significance to the image other than to illustrate accompanying text. Mosmof (talk) 07:42, 17 November 2009 (UTC)
- Keep As noted in the FU rationale, the image itself is considered iconic, and text alone cannot capture the emotion of the moment, which is considered one of the greatest in hockey history. It is used exclusively in an article on hockey history in a section that specifically discusses the event. As to the notability of the image itself: [1], [2], [3], [4], [5], [6]. It is the image of the event, and its enduring fame is very easy to show. Resolute 14:54, 17 November 2009 (UTC)
- Keep per Resolute, this is an iconic image that is pretty much the image of the event, and pictures can convey alot that words cannot, and this is one of those situations. -DJSasso (talk) 16:31, 17 November 2009 (UTC)
- Comment: I stand corrected - image itself is pretty iconic and notable. But as far as I can see, there is no mention of the photograph or its notability within the section. It seems that the image is being used to illustrate the event rather than to illustrate itself. Non-free images aren't used to illustrate what is already described in news reports or "capture the emotion of the moment". Given the sources already cited in the rationale, it probably wouldn't be too hard write a section about the photograph. I'd be happy to do it when I have a spare 20 minutes, but I'd defer to editors who've already worked on the article. --Mosmof (talk) 00:56, 18 November 2009 (UTC)
- I was figuring you might say that. ;) I'll add a sentence or two on the NHL history article, likely tomorrow, to satisfy this. The image itself could (and should) get greater coverage on the Summit Series article, but that likely wont happen for a bit. Resolute 01:02, 18 November 2009 (UTC)

- Comment Cropping would be the cheap option because most are pretty well composed; however they're also over processed, and considering I would've transferred them to the commons had this (and the copyright graphics) not been the case (meaning they would be deleted anyway) - I think deleting them now would save a lot of hassle... and a bit of drive space. oneblackline (talk) 17:01, 17 November 2009 (UTC)
- As for drive space: images are not usually totally erased, I managed to have File:Bmk.JPG restored in August 2009 after it was mistakenly deleted in September 2008. Hekerui (talk) 17:30, 17 November 2009 (UTC)
- Perhaps the deleted files are simply removed from public access and retained for a set period (say 12 months) in case of exceptional circumstances... e.g. the realisation that a deleted image was the last unique image of a notable person before their death, or a building before demolition... but I'm not sure this would be an efficient policy; and would seem to be taking too much responsibility for image makers.oneblackline (talk) 17:17, 18 November 2009 (UTC)

- In this case perhaps cropping would be acceptable, but others are also over-manipulated. All the users images I've nominated for deletion are attentively composed and the cropping would eliminate this, so I thought it would be considerate to allow Dabbishaw to correct the images himself and upload them straight to the commons. oneblackline (talk) 16:04, 21 November 2009 (UTC)

- Keep Looked around for other Austrian stamps on Commons and found File:Stamp Austria 1964-1193-UPU.jpg - stamps are in public domain. Tried to copy template {{PD-AustrianGov}} but it is not recognized in Wikipedia. Solution: Transfer to Commons and add the template there. I don't know how to operate the bot that does that. To ww2censor: I'm on/off Wikipedia depending on other committments; I believe it would be more constructive for the Encyclopedia to leave a note on my talk page, asking for clarification, instead of hacking content away with only seven days notice. Power.corrupts (talk) 08:53, 18 November 2009 (UTC)
- Comment actually the use of the {{PD-AustrianGov}} template might be an invalid licence for Austrian stamps even though I was the editor who specifically added that template to commons:File:Stamp Austria 1964-1193-UPU.jpg but now think was incorrect. It appears that interpretation of Austrian law is too liberal to include stamps as official works: if they have been published as part of a law or official decree or edict, or if they have been released as an official announcement or for public information. ww2censor (talk) 05:14, 19 November 2009 (UTC)
- Wouldnt a 100 years commemoration for somebody's death qualify as the latter, public information? I would still say that the existing non-free rationale, if relevant at all, is quite solid. Power.corrupts (talk) 09:07, 19 November 2009 (UTC)

Given the large number of images (see http://nosubject.com/Jacques_Lacan:Pictures) of him....some work needs to be done to show the image is NOT replaceable. Google searching for provenance of these images is a poor substitute for off-line digging. The images were never created as digital works and what is online are unsourced representations of images that exist in other media. What I wish for here, and for other debates of the same character, is that the claim the image is not replaceable is backed up by more than the subjects death date. - Peripitus (Talk) 07:49, 20 November 2009 (UTC)

- Unnecessary non-free screenshot of an animated TV character. Character's article Kim Possible (character) is already sufficiently illustrated by another, more characteristic, image in the infobox. This one is ostensibly meant to illustrate the fact that the character also appears as a chearleader, a piece of information that is only of marginal relevance to the article and not in need of visual support to be understood. Fut.Perf. ☼ 10:19, 20 November 2009 (UTC)
- Keep, illustrates Kim in the "other" part of her life that the text explains as being the very reason she has the physicality to pursue her "more characteristic" side, "Kim is extremely athletic and has excellent reflexes that have been honed through years of cheerleading practice". Visual support is necessary to show the differences between her "crimefighting side" and the "normal cheerleader side", akin to showing Batman/Bruce Wayne with and without his batsuit and mask. :) Dreadstar ☥ 17:23, 20 November 2009 (UTC)
- Keep Agree with Dreadstar insofar as the infobox image is the "crimefighter" image, this is used in conjunction with the section that focuses on the "scholastic" aspect.Skier Dude (talk) 20:09, 20 November 2009 (UTC)
- Keep Illustrates cheerleader normal kid Kim vs existing Crimefighter. RP459 (talk) 04:30, 21 November 2009 (UTC)
- Comment: These keep arguments are unconvincing. Unlike in the Batman/Bruce Wayne example cited by Dreadstar, the "crimefighter" and the "normal life" side of this character do not differ in terms of physical presence and persona – or if they do, the article isn't saying anything about that. The existing image at the top of the article gives me a concrete enough impression of the character's physical persona that I can vividly imagine her in any normal life role, including that of a cheerleader, without any difficulty. The second image thus adds nothing. Fut.Perf. ☼ 08:15, 21 November 2009 (UTC)
